Expo Tour Notes

Notes for tours of the Expo.

The Expo Tour is a regular opportunity to get together in Second Life and meet others involved in the the Virtual Collaboration Environment. It is particularly useful for new avatars to find their feed (and voice). You are encouraged to come along and join in.

The Expo is an exposition of projects, tools and resources relevant to the Whole of Society Crises Response (WoSCR) community. The initial Expo has a number of sections:

• Other PMESII Tools and Programs (Simulex Reference World, Simulex Duality, SEAS-VIS, SecondChina)

Welcome to the OpenVCE Expo exhibition area. In this building we exhibit posters from different sites to give information on technologies and accomplishments on many Virtual World related projects.

This information should show up in your default Internet browser, e.g. IE or Firefox. If not, for best viewing result, you can modify the Second Life option to choose to use an external Internet browser.

To do so, select Edit/Preference; followed by choosing “Web”. Within that page, tick "Use external web browser (Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer)", followed by click "OK". This will set your default Second Life Internet browser to your normal browser.

If you try again now and right click on any poster to see the relevant web site, the web content should now show correctly in your normal Internet browser.

• Register Second Life and obtain a (free) avatar via http://join.secondlife.com. Use the "People" link at the top to see the complete set of started human avatars. The avatar can be changed and tailored easily to a wider range once inside Second Life.

Meeting Minutes

The discussion was largely about EU FP7 options.

• We agreed that the Security call deadline is too close, and will not try to put together a submission.
• The ICT call with its mid-January deadline is more realistic, but the Cognitive Science and Robotics theme might not be very suitable. In fact none of the call topics is an obvious fit.
• A COST action is still desirable and should try that one. Next collection date is March 2010, and it takes about 3 pages of technical poroposal in the first instance. So it's not urgent. Also, this does not fund research.
• FET Open could be our best option. Submission is anytime, but next round of proposals will be evaluated end of November (tight!) or May 2011. It takes about 6 pages for the first stage, which we might be able to put together quickly.

The discussion then moved on to next steps (actions):

• We need to get to know each others areas of expertise and research interests better. Gerhard and Stephen will set up on OpenVCE on which everybody should add some information about their area of expertise and research interests.
• We will meet again in SL. Gerhard will create another doodle poll for next week.
• At the next meeting we (each) will give short (5-10 minutes) presentations about our area of expertise / research interests.
• This bottom up approach could be complemented with a top down approach where we try to come up with a unifying theme (a project idea) into which we could fit what we do: AI for Crisis Response!

Another topic that was briefly discussed was the size of this group. A few more people would not hurt, but it is probably too early for open invitation on mailing lists. But if anybody knows of individuals who might be interested, we should invite them to come along.

SL seems to work well so far.

Best papers from KSCO-2012 alongside other submissions will be included in a Special Issue on Knowledge Systems for Coalition Operations of IEEE Intelligent Systems in early 2013.

VATAR - Ultimate Challenge

Coming soon... the ultimate trial of your ability to manipulate and use your avatar in Second Life. You will need a lot of skills, though we hope other VATAR sessions will have prepared you well.  But you will also be up against the clock!  But if you can complete the challenge in the set time, and can make the required report with images at the end, then your reward will be an official personalized "OpenVCE.net Ultimate Challenge Completion Certificate" which you can put on your CV.  You will also be added if you wish to the OpenVCE.net Ultimate Challenge Hall of Fame here. 

But this will not be easy... you have one hour maximum to complete this course...

4. Teleport from there up to the "Sky Launch Platform".  You will need the code from the Dive Trench (it alters frequently) to access this teleport location. Make sure you pick up and wear a parachute (provided) if you do not already have one.  [Image 3 required]

6. Skydive down, watching out for the JOE Virtual Reality Rooms in the sky as you come down, and return as quickly as you can to the Central Plaza.

1st International Virtual Emergency Exercise - Swine Flu Outbreak

The WoSCR OpenVCE team are engaged in trials of scenario based virtual exercises in Second Life and other virtual worlds such as Forterra OLIVE. They are participants and observers in the "1st International Virtual Emergency Exercise" taking place on 5th May 2009 at the Disaster and Emergency Management (DEM) facility created in Second Life by Ali Asgary and his team at York University, Toronto, Canada. The exercise is organized by the Emergency Management Program at York University and supported by the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) in Canada.

The exercise involves role play in a simulation of the handling of a Swine Flu (Influenza A H1N1) outbreak in a region. It makes use of a tabletop simulation exercise for pandemic influenza preparedness in local health agencies (RAND Technical Report 319 - http://www.rand.org/pubs/technical_reports/TR319/) created by RAND Corporation in 2006. Note on Virtual Participation Techniques in Use

A mixture of techniques is being used to provide the SORASC09 workshop to virtual participants from the Whole of Society approach for Crises Response (WoSCR) community. This includes the use of Second Life as a virtual world (VW) 3D meeting space relaying the video and audio from the event via Apple Quicktime media streaming, and sessions using CMU's "CourseCast" system.

• If you need to set up a Second Life avatar and the Second Life viewer, see this advice.
• CourseCast requirement is for Microsoft "Silverlight" browser plugin to replay the content in your web browser. Test your browser is set up for Silverlight.

This event for virtual participants uses early stage availability of the Open Virtual Collaboration Environment facilities and should be considered as an experiment. The organizers will try to provide the meeting content to participants as well as can be arranged on the day. Current status will be posted here, and via Twitter with tag #openvce.

We appreciate that some of you may not have permissions to install software, browser plugins, or that firewall issues could cause problems. Please e-mail "Skye Gears" <skye.gears@googlemail.com> (our virtual meeting assistant) and she will try to help, or point you at potential alternatives to get the most out of what you have available.
