The "Greybeards Project" is about designing virtual guides for virtual worlds that can help people in their journeys. They can be used as guides for your SIM, mentors, and for fully immersive training.
The first of these "Virtual Guides" is Sun Tzu who was demonstrated for the U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM) exhibit at MODSIM World on October 14-16, 2009 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Sun Tzu uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies from Daden Limited inside of the virtual world Second Life. This advanced AI provides many capabilities for the use of automated avatars in virtual worlds for training and as virtual guides including:
The "web scraping" technology enables the Virtual Guide to respond to questions by scraping data off web services (like Wikipedia and others) to provide responses to your questions.

Greybeards modest suggestion
The Sun Tzu avatar is great, but when considering future VGs how about adding some women to the mix?? Ahem!
A few possibilities spring to mind: Eleanor Roosevelt, Quan Yin, Florence Nightingale, Indira Ghandi, Sacagawea
The project would also need a more inclusive name, tho...

Ageism
And its ageist as well as sexist to consider that all useful knowledge comes from old grey bearded men :-)
Tara, I hope you found Sun Tzu and some of the other characters on the VCE Region. Check out the JOE GeoDome in the SW of VCE region in Second Life to find Sun Tzu.
Thanks for bringing that up
A lot will depend on the end customers as to which Virtual Guides end up being developed. I'd love to a wide variety of them. And yes it would be nice to represent both men and women at a variance of ages. And they wouldn't all have to have grey beards.
I see a lot of potential for AI in virtual worlds. I think this can finally help us take technology to a level where people become comfortable with using and programming Artificial Intelligence.
It has such tremendous possibilities for training and customer service.
