I-LE : Intelligent Learning Environment

The growth of AI technologies significant increases, it would be the benefits in many fields especially in education. The major tasks are to help the students be able to learning anywhere at any time and to support the collaboration tasks between students or teachers. However, the existing E-learning system likes Moodle are a semi-interactive learning that they are implemented based on the web-based system that they are not able to intelligent interactive and provide collaboration within a group in the real time. Apart from E-learning systems, virtual world has been developed such as second life. It presented the idea of collaboration within the virtual community but the second life doesn’t provide the knowledgeable environments such as automated tutoring system and intelligence space for working as the group.
The aims of the research are to find the technologies and methods for better collaborating students to work in the collaboration tasks such as learning, meeting, group project and tutorial session. This concept is to provide the knowledgeable area and intelligence interactive between students called the virtual intelligent interactive learning environment. This system could help individual works as well as collaboration activities to get the effective learning outcomes. It’s not only the space for working but it should be interactive with person (e.g. students and tutors) to help them success their goals. This research will be device into two parts. First, the learning models and activities to understand how the learning systems could work such as teaching and tutorial processes. Second, the interactive part, this system will be involved with task, process, activity, and knowledge management and model.
Although there are many learning systems and virtual spaces which can be used as the tools for developing learning space but they are designed for different purpose and functions. Generally, they only provide tools for users but not in AI techniques such as planning, task and activities management and knowledge. In this section, some relevant applications and researches are presented.
Moodle is the common well-known E-learning system. It is a web-based application that provides the tools for teachers to create class and enable student to interact with them. However, Moodle only use a tool but it cannot express the intelligence such as automatically provide knowledge to help students reach their tasks. Moreover, most institutes generally use it as a course website which contains course information, lecture slides and assignment submission.
SLoodle  is a simulation linked objected oriented dynamic learning environment. In short, it is a combination between Second Life and Moodle. The main purpose is to use functions in Moodle such as classroom, lecture slides, quiz and chat room which can be represented in the 3D virtual world. This idea leads to virtual learning space which students and teachers can use their avatars to communicate and link with Moodle learning content. Since learning part is based on Moodle, users will need to decide and create which tools will be used in this class and it still cannot provide and suggestion or interactive between system and users. However, using Second Life can lead to collaboration space that makes a dynamic environment using avatars.
I-Room [2,5] is an “intelligent room” for supporting collaborative activities and providing knowledge for users that lead to decision making. I-Room uses the concepts of AI planning, workflow, task and activities management. For instances, it acts like a knowledge assistant among group of people to reach the goal. A room is a virtual space as in Second Life and OpenSim to provide the collaborative space for users by using their avatar and this technique is cheaper than using a real teleconferencing. However, I-Room have been set up to support the meeting such as virtual emergency for e-Response, a creative industry and an educational activity.
Mixed initiative tutoring systems are the tutoring systems that involve students and computer to interact during tutoring period. BEETLE is “the Basic Electricity and Electronics Tutorial Learning Environment” [6,7] which is the example for this tutoring system. It uses tutorial dialogue to interact and give and feedback to students. BEETLE used techniques of planning, task and activities management to manage tutorial dialogue and generate the appropriate responses feedback to students. This idea is relevant to the intelligent tutoring system that is one of research goals.
The ideas of this research are to study and develop a system that can be referred as a virtual intelligent interactive learning space. To contribute the research, some technologies and techniques need be explored such as Semantic Web, Web 2.0, virtual world (i.e., Second Life and OpenSim), AI planning, tasks and activities management and knowledge representation and management along with some existing systems in Section 2. The growth of Semantic Web allows reusable resources and data of web. Therefore, we might use it as a source to provide knowledge for helping collaborative work. AI techniques can be useful for interaction part as the mixed-initiative system that can communicate with students during tutoring or teaching session. In addition to the techniques and technologies, the learning processes and models also need be considered in order to gain the better learning outcome. The learning models might help us understand the basic activities and workflow before designing and implementing the system.
* We might consider implementing the system based on the virtual world applications (SL or OpenSim)
